Yohji Yamamoto Flips the FYW-97 With a Modern Redesign

adidas’ recently revived FYW-97 continues to roll out in new colorways this month, as the brand continues to celebrate the Torsion Bar embedded in the midsole. However, this month also features a new iteration of the vintage silhouette, designed by none other than Yohji Yamamoto.

The adidas FYW-97 first reappeared on the Three Stripes’ retail shelves earlier this year, as a special edition release for Consortium’s ode to the Torsion Bar. Originally released in 1997 as the adidas Salvation, the sleek silhouette was the first running model to feature Feet You Wear technology. While the latest iterations of the shoe retain the original 90s FYW tech, a new update from Yohji Yamamoto, the mind behind adidas Y-3, is ready to release this month.

Yohji Yamamoto’s version of the adidas FYW-97 retains all the important styles we love from the standard edition while adding plenty of improvements all around. First, the Y-3 helmed silhouette begins with a single-piece Primeknit upper, layered to provide extra support in key area. The toe box features a rounded cage to assist in both lacing and forefoot reinforcement, while new EVA-protected Boost tooling provides all the cushioning you’ll need for all-day comfort.

Yohji Yamamoto’s unique take on the adidas FYW-97 has been scheduled to release next week, on July 18th, 2019. The Boost-filled rework of the classic runner will likely retail somewhere above $250, and release from both adidas and select Y-3 retailers.
